Dr. Binkiewicz focuses on recent United States political and cultural history and California history.  Her interests include labor and immigration history. She has published several articles about US arts policy and a book, Federalizing the Muse: United States Arts Policy, 1965-1980 (Chapel Hill: University of North Carolina Press, 2004). Her newest publication Between the Sea and Sky: The Saga of My Portuguese Family in Upcounty Maui, 1881-1941 (2021) blends history and non-fiction to explore the immigration of a Portuguese family from the Azores to Maui and their struggles to achieve a better future.
