Chicana/Latina Feminisms Conference: "Joteando Por Vida! Para Que Nunca Mas Nos Vuelvan A Borrar"
April 19, 2011The Chicana/Latina Feminisms Conference “Joteando Por Vida! Para Que Nunca Mas Nos Vuelvan A Borrar” will feature leading scholars in Chicana Feminisms as well as inspiring performers, filmmakers, and spoken-word artists. Please register for the conference at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/ZQ35NLM. The conference is open to everyone, and there is no registration fee.
The conference will address Jota/Queer issues by confronting such topics as borders, heteropatriarchy, homophobia, racism, classism, sexism, and colonization. The conference will also discuss the ways in which mujeres and Queer Chicanas/Latinas, as well as their allies, resist acts of violence.
Due to the homophobic backlash that followed the first Chicana Feminisms conference in 2010, this conference seeks to reflect and account for the ways that people continue to live in environments that perpetuate homophobic and sexist violence.
The goal of the conference is to reclaim lost stories and tackle intersectional identities by building bridges in communities. Moreover, the conference seeks to create spaces for marginalized voices by centering the voces de jotería in resistance to “chronic erasure.” When las mujeres and la jotería are centered, when the center becomes queer, the way in which individuals understand the issues that Chicanas/Latinas face shifts, allowing for deeper and more transformative analysis and action.
The conference seeks to move mujeres and Queer Chicanas/Latinas, as well as their compañeras, toward informed and empowered communities.
