About Me: In the past 20 years, I have worked in different capacities within the fields of immigration. I began working as a social worker with refugees in Canada, then for the United Nations, and ultimately at California State University, Long Beach. Currently, I work as a coordinator in the Department of Anthropology. I am delighted to work with so many vibrant and intelligent people. My primary goals in this position are to help students with personal growth, promote opportunities that will enhance their university experience, as well as foster a safe and collegial working environment for faculty and staff. Academically, I am a Psycholinguist and Social Science researcher. As for my personal life, I am an environmentalist and Human Rights advocate. Living a simple & happy life, I enjoy cooking, gardening and am passionate about world music and cinema/movies.

  • Quintiliani, Karen, and Mitra Baghdadi, et al. (2019) “Meet Them Where They’re At.” Ethnographic Research Project with the City of Long Beach Health and Human Services Department, Homeless Services Outreach Team – Collaborative research project with the health department’s homeless outreach team and the continuum of care partners, Police Department, Quality of Life Officers, and Fire Department, HEART team to understand why some homeless individuals do not regularly take up services offered to them. This question is reconnoitered from multiple perspectives: a) clients who are currently receiving services; b) clients who pass up services; and, c) the outreach team members who attempt to address and assess each client’s unique circumstances. Additionally, we explore what type of services exist and do not exist that create opportunities and barriers to receiving or accepting services. “Meet Them Where They’re At.”

  • Baghdadi, Mitra, Melissa Sue Maceyko, and Luzilda Carrillo (July 2019) Survey and study on Diversity, Work in progress-  The intent of the survey is to measure the level of diversity in California AAUW (American Association of University women) branches in the hope that we may actively improve the diversity of our membership. We will have the survey ready to launch by the mid-March and will report on the preliminary findings at the AAUW CA Convention in April. By the end of June, We will have a full report of the survey results.
  • Baghdadi, Mitra and Melissa Sue Maceyko (April 2018) Diversity, Inclusion, and Marginalization, Presentation and workshop, the AAUW California Convention 2018. This was an introductory discussion of diversity and inclusion followed by an activity on identities and marginalization. Members learned how to make branches attractive to a diverse membership.

Anthropology 499- Directed Reading in Homelessness- Anthropology Department
California State University, Long Beach
• This course is an introduction to the complex issues surrounding homelessness in Long Beach.
• The course explores the incidence, measurement, and explanations for homelessness across disciplines and agencies.
• Community learning integrates local service needs, policies, and provisions structured to address homelessness. Service learning provides an opportunity for students to engage in community learning with agencies that work on housing issues or provide services directly to persons and families experiencing homelessness.
• Homelessness and housing insecurity are related phenomenon, this course will integrate content on short term and long term (permanent) housing, policies designed to stabilize housing as well as changes among who is represented among those counted as homeless.
• Varying social policies and service needs of homeless persons are discussed.
