SDSU/Loma Swing Results

Another wonderful weekend for Beach Forensics! At the SDSU/Loma Swing, Isabel Guzman was the 1st place champion in Novice Persuasion at both halves of the swing! At the second half, Emily Rodriguez finished 2nd place in Open Persuasion and John Garnreiter made a finals appearance in Open Dramatic Interpretation! As of this tournament, every member of the speech team who has competed is now qualified for the National Forensics Association Championship in April! GO BEACH!!

Beach Forensics had a fantastic week at the California Swing tournaments! At the first swing tournament, the rookie team of Elie Nehme and Christian Vazquez were semi-finalists. At the second swing tournament, the rookie team of Elie Nehme and Christian Vazquez were semi-finalists (and Vazquez was the 2nd place overall speaker). Team President Jaysyn Green was recognized and awarded as the “Best in Forensics,” a prestigious award given annually at the Kathryn Klassic! The team was also fortunate to hear Tommie Smith deliver a keynote address at the awards ceremony! Next up is our home tournament, Winter at the Beach! Go Beach!

Debate and Civility Event: Girl Scouts

Beach Forensics and Girl Scouts!In late October, members of Beach Forensics met with a local Girl Scout troop to discuss issues of debate and civility in contemporary public issues. The team discussed fundamentals of argument, refutation, and civility with members of the troop and then had several mini-debates. Beach Forensics remains committed to improving our local communities and working with local organizations to promote the skills and values of sound argument!

Beach Forensics Enjoying a Tournament Meal

Beach Forensics had an extraordinary outing at the CSU Northridge tournament. In speech, two rookies brought home hardware. Andrew Kim took 6th place in Extemporaenous Speaking. Emily Rodriguez was the tournament champion in Persuasive Speaking! Emily then entered the second half of the tournament in varsity Persuasive Speaking and took second place! In debate, Team President Jaysyn Green was the top individual speaker in varsity! The rookie duo of Elie Nehme and Christian Vazquez were the 4th and 9th ranked individual speakers and the tournament champions! This marks Nehme and Vazquez’s second tournament championship this season! GO BEACH!

Reclaiming Democracy, a Teach-In

Team President Jaysyn Green sharing thoughts on the youth voteOn October 11, members of Beach Forensics participated in an on-campus teach-in that discussed issues pertaining to voter suppression and the health of our democracy. Team President Jaysyn Green delivered a keynote address on the role of the youth in combating voter suppression, arguing that the youth will prove indispensable in the upcoming midterm elections.

 

Director of Forensics Michael Eisenstadt sharing thoughts on the role of the mainstream media in the upcoming midterm electionGreen was joined by Director of Forensics, Dr. Michael Eisenstadt, who delivered a keynote address on the intersections between voter suppression and public trust in the mainstream media, arguing that voters have a responsibility to engage news content more carefully when deciding how to cast their ballots in the upcoming midterm election.

Results: Aztec Invitational at San Diego State University

Beach Forensics made a huge splash at the Aztec Invitational hosted by San Diego State University. The rookie team of Elie Nehme and Christian Vazquez were the tournament champions and recognized as the 4th and 9th individual speakers. The varsity team of Jaysyn Green and Elvis Pineda finished the tournament as semi-finalists and were recognized as the 4th and 1st place individual speakers! Congratulations to both teams!
