More Award-Winning Geography Student Research Projects!

Nearing the end of the Spring, 2021 semester, a number of student research projects from the Geography 464 (Sustainable Cities) and Geography/Environmental Science and Policy 450 (Sustainability & Social Justice) took home awards at the 2021 Sustainability Showcase.  Here is a breakdown of the winning projects from the GEOG 464 & GEOG/ESP 450 classes:

Category: Research Related to Environment or Natural Sciences:

• 2nd Place: “LA River Revitalization & Green Gentrification” by Jessica Ramos-Guerra, Jose Rios, and Erick Estrada (GEOG 464)
• 3rd Place (tie): “Oceans: Invasive Species from the Aquarium Trade” by Chelsea Inthavong, Kevin Bartelheim, Shaun Gross, Rachel Biller, Nicole Angel, Jacob Castillo, and Jonathan Lau (GEOG/ESP 450)
• 3rd Place (tie): “LA River Master Plan Evaluation” by Hugo Chi, Sofia Cunningham, Sailé Gutierrez, and Perla Rios Munoz (GEOG 464)
• 3rd Place (tie): “Biodiversity Conservation” by Edgar Alvarez, Amanda Torres, Phoebe Evans, Andrew Pham, and Brendan Schultheis (GEOG/ESP 450)

• 1st Place: “Earth Day Lesson Plan: Recycling Our Waste” by Gwen Atizado, Ashley Dizon, Luis Hernandez, and Devyn Yuhashi (GEOG 464)
• 2nd Place (tie): “How is UAIZ Legislation Being Utilized in Long Beach?” by Holly Haile and Sean Simpson (GEOG 464)
• 2nd Place (tie): “Earth Day Lesson Plan for Climate Change Adaptation” by Jose Cruz (GEOG 464)
• 3rd Place: “California Wildfires” by Kathy Chavarria, Seth Hall, Arthella Vallarta, Holly Haile, Kevin West, and Riley Symons (GEOG/ESP 450)
