Crises are happening all around us in rapid succession. From mass shootings, to a pandemic, to climate change, journalists have to be prepared to cover these crises and public relations professionals have to be prepared to manage them. JPR 2023 will examine crisis coverage and management in the world while preparing students with the skills needed to cover breaking news and communicate clearly during times of uncertainty. Additionally, JPR 2023 will focus on helping journalists and public relations students learn the tools to help them mentally and emotionally recover from crisis reporting and exposure.

This panel will focus on how JPR professionals can cope with trauma after exposure. JPR professionals are often the first on the scene of a crisis, right there with the firefighters, police and EMTs. And while first responders all have extensive protocols, procedures and counseling requirements to help them reacclimate after a crisis, PR professionals and journalists usually have to go right back to the office to cover the next story. Trauma from responding to acts of mass violence or crises can cause long-lasting mental, physical and emotional stress. In this panel we will source mental health, crisis management and emergency response training professionals who can teach our JPR students skills to help them process through their trauma exposure and tools to help them manage during and after.

Host: Kadie, Class of 2023
