Funded Opportunities for Students
This is a collection of grants, fellowships, and other funded opportunities in areas that may be of interest to Linguistics students, such as languages, international studies, public service, law, education and research.
First Year Onward
International / language study
- UK-US Fulbright Summer Institutes: 3 to 6-week academic and cultural summer programs for freshmen and sophomores. Deadline: late February/ early March.
- Boren Scholarship: Summer, semester, and year-long study in regions critical to US national security. Requires 1-year commitment to federal government employment after graduation (can be deferred). Deadline: mid-January.
- Critical Language Scholarship (CLS): Funds intensive summer language study in countries where critical languages related to national security are spoken (Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Japanese, Korean etc…). Deadline: mid-November
- Gilman Scholarship: Funding for study abroad and internships abroad for students receiving Pell Grants. Deadlines: early October for Spring programs; early March for Summer, Fall or Academic Year programs.
- CBCF Japan Study Abroad: CBCF Congressional Black Caucus Kakehashi Project: Paid 10-day study abroad in Japan. Deadline: varies
- Middlebury Language Schools: Fully funded (tuition, room and board) for a summer language study at Vermont. Deadline: December 15
Public service
- Hoover institution summer policy bootcamp: Paid 1-week program studying US policy. Deadline: January.
- Weidner Summer: 4-week program in Florida State University focusing on law school admissions and careers in law. Application open January 1.
- Harvard public policy and leadership conference: Paid summer leadership program for freshmen + sophomores. Deadline: Oct.
Research
- Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP): one-year experience in research with CSULB faculty.
- Summer Research Opportunity Program: research internships at a variety of universities
- NSF Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU): research internships at a variety of universities
- University-specific summer research programs: North Carolina, Maryland, USC (DIA Jumpstart) and UC Irvine (SURF).
Sophomore Year
International / language study

- Summer Rangel: State dept. program on foreign affairs and policy for undergrads. Deadline: Early February.
- Mt Vernon Leadership Fellows: Paid 6-week leadership conference on governance, history and policy. Deadline: January.
- State Department Virtual Student Internship: E-Internships with the state dept. on a variety of topics. Deadline: July.

Research
- BUILD: 2-year CSULB research training and graduate school preparation program
- Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP): 1-year experience in research with CSULB faculty.
- McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Program: a CSULB TRiO program to prepare and support underrepresented undergraduate students in their pursuit of doctoral studies
- Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship: CSULB campus fellowship, training for grad school and stipend for research. Deadline: February
- Summer Research Early Identification Program (SR-EIP): Paid summer internship with mentorship on research in all fields.
- Summer Research Opportunity Program: research internships at a variety of universities. Deadline: early February
- NSF Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU): research internships at a variety of universities. Deadlines: vary by site, but typically January-February
- University-specific summer research programs: North Carolina, Maryland, USC (DIA Jumpstart) and UC Irvine (SURF). Deadlines typically around January.
Junior Year
International / language study
- Fulbright U.S. Student Program: One year of international research, study, or English teaching. Deadline: mid-September.
- Pickering Foreign Affairs Fellowships: 2-year fellowship from the State dept. to fund an MA in foreign affairs and policy. For those interested in careers in the U.S. Foreign Service. Deadline: early November.

- Truman: $30,000 for graduate or professional school for juniors demonstrating commitment to impact through public service, academic promise, and leadership. Deadline: mid-November.
- Humanity in Action: 5-week summer community-based research on resisting intolerance and exploring models of action to remedy injustice in either Amsterdam, Atlanta, Berlin, Copenhagen, Detroit, Sarajevo, or Warsaw. Deadline: early January.

- PPIA Summer Fellowships: 7-week Junior Summer Institute (JSI) before senior year equips fellows to succeed in Masters of joint degrees, typically in public policy, public administration, international affairs. Deadline: early November.

Senior Year, Graduate or Alumni
Graduate School
- Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowship: Fellowship for immigrants or children of immigrants to attend graduate school. Deadline: Nov 1.
Graduate School Abroad
- Rhodes Scholarship: Two or more years’ graduate study at Oxford University in all fields. Applicants should demonstrate academic excellence, leadership potential in their fields, and the will to “fight the world’s fight.” Deadline: August 1.
- Marshall Scholarship: Two years of graduate study in the UK in all fields. Deadline: August 1.
- Mitchell Scholarship: One year of post-graduate study in Ireland/Northern Ireland in all fields. There are three selection criteria: scholarship, leadership, and sustained commitment to public service. Deadline: August 1.
- Gates-Cambridge Scholarship: Postgraduate degrees at Cambridge University in all fields. Applicants must show evidence of commitment to improving the lives of others. Deadline: mid-October, later for non-US citizens.
- Schwarzman Scholarship: One year Master’s program (in English) at Tsinghua University in Beijing with a concentration in International Affairs, Economics and Business, or Public Policy for future leaders in various fields. Deadline: August 1
- Chevening: Paid 1-year scholarship to complete a Masters in the UK on any subject. Deadline: November.
International / language study
- Peace Corps: 27-month international work in areas including TESOL
- Fulbright U.S. Student Program: One year of international research, study, or English teaching. Deadline: mid-September.
- Critical Language Scholarship (CLS): Funds intensive summer language study in countries where critical languages related to national security are spoken (Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Japanese, Korean etc…). Deadline: mid-November
- English Language Fellows: State Dept program offering full-time, 10-month, in-country EFL teaching fellowships abroad (requires an MA). Deadline: December
- DAAD Scholarships: Semester and year-long internships/research/study in all fields in Germany. Deadlines vary. Many require university endorsement. Campus deadline for Masters or PhD-level research or study: mid-October.

- Rotary Global Grant: $30,000 towards a postgraduate degree abroad on select topics. Deadline December.

- Princeton in Asia or Africa or Latin America: Paid year-long fellowships in Africa and Asian countries focused on a variety of fields including teaching, business, journalism. Deadline: November.
- Various -Paid English Teaching Abroad: JET (JAPAN), Korea (SMOE, EPIK), NALCAP (Spain), TAPIF (France), EOD (Chile), USTA (Austria). Various deadlines.
- Middlebury Language Schools: Fully funded (tuition, room and board) for a summer language study at Vermont. Deadline: December 15
Public Service & Leadership
- Carnegie Endowment for International Peace Fellows Program: 1-year fellowship with senior policy experts in a variety of leadership and foreign affairs topics. Deadline: early January.
- State Dept scholarships for MAs in foreign affairs: Pickering Foreign Affairs Fellowships, Rangel Fellowships, Payne Fellowships. Deadlines: early November.
- Scoville Fellowships: 6-9 month post-graduation fellowship on governance, security and peace. Deadline: Early February.
- EHLS: Scholarships for native speakers of critical languages to prepare for jobs in the federal government.
Research
- Michigan Language Assessment internships: paid internships for TESOL graduate students and professionals. Deadline: January.
