BQE Text FA22

November 19, 2022 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

The text portion of the Basic Qualifying Exam (BQE) will be held on Saturday November 19th from 1:00pm–4:00pm in room LA3–120. The two texts for this fall semester are:

Text 1: Lewis, D. (1979). Scorekeeping in a language game. Journal of Philosophical Logic, 8(1): 339–359.
Text 2: Singer, P. (1990). All animals are equal. In his Animal Liberation 2nd edition (1–23). Jonathan Cape.

Students are responsible for retrieving the texts. (For certain pedagogical reasons, the Graduate Committee deliberately does not post them anywhere. Both articles are easily available, e.g., via the CSULB library, BeachReach, and so forth.)

Prof. Rosenkrantz will be organizing a BQE orientation meeting soon; he will explain the nature of the exam, how to prepare, answer questions, et cetera. If you have questions, please consult the BQE orientation handout. If further assistance is needed, please speak with Prof. Max Rosenkrantz.

Additional information about the location of the exam will be forthcoming. Normally, registration is required. To register, students shall respond to the RSVP e-mail from Prof. Max Rosenkrantz at the beginning of November. It’s possible that the exam will be held online. If so, the Zoom link will be provided upon registration. Please get settled before the exam, and arrive early as needed. Dr. Rosenkrantz will be available to field questions as early as 12:30pm.
