‘Hinge trust: from Wittgenstein’s On Certainty to AI’
Wednesday 30 Nov 2022  •  6:00pm  •  LA5–167

Abstract: This talk considers Wittgenstein’s remarks about trust in On Certainty. I show how, for him, trust is a basic epistemological notion that characterizes our relationship to hinges. These, in turn, are the conditions of possibility of knowledge and justification. Given the basicness of this notion and the role trust plays for Wittgenstein with respect to hinges, I call the account of trust we can elicit from On Certainty ‘hinge trust’. I then bring this account to bear a contemporary debate about trust and show how hinge trust can help redress it. The talk will close by highlighting one of the most exciting applications of the notion of hinge trust: heated debates about the very possibility of trusting artificial intelligence.

This event is a co-sponsored by four departments and programs {HIST, PHIL, GERM, JWSH}. CLA Scholarly Intersections funding is graciously acknowledged. Other contributors include students in PHIL425/525 and PHIL610, plus support from the Student Philosophy Association (SPA).
