The ethics rdgrp meets again!

June 19, 2022 @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm

The fifth meeting of the SU22 ethics reading party will occur at 5:30pm this Sunday June 19th via Zoom.

Tentatively, organizer Yahui Chen will lead the reading party through a discussion of Christine Korsgaard’s paper, ‘Kant’s analysis of obligation: the argument of Foundations I‘, which appeared in the journal The Monist in 1989.  The following abstract,

In this paper my aim is to show how Kant’s analysis of the concept of obligation, contained in the argument of Foundations I, provides a solution to the problem of obligation that emerged from the controversy between Rationalism and Sentimentalism. After explaining how the very concept of obligation generates a dilemma which is central to that controversy, I articulate how the argument of Foundations I shows the way out of this dilemma, and, in so doing, shows what sort of thing an obligation must be.

provides evidence of just how simple and easy this paper will be to read. So come join us for a hearty dose of deontology this weekend, and share your thoughts with the group! Don’t say you Kant!

Participants will take a breather the following Sunday June 26th, but will regroup the following Sunday July 3rd to follow up with Onora O’Neill (1989), ‘Reason and autonomy in Grundlegung III‘. Volunteers are invited to lead the next discussion.
