Ethics Reading Party

July 3, 2022 @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm

After a short breather, the SU22 ethics reading party will be hitting its stride this weekend (5:30pm 03 July on Zoom) with a further discussion of Kantian ethics. As a follow-up to Christine Korsgaard’s 1989 paper, the party will be working through Baroness Onora O’Neill’s ‘Reason and autonomy in Grundlegung III‘. Here is an abstract:

Much of the interpretative difficulty in reading Kant’s Grundlegung arises from framework shifts between a metaphysic of morals and a critique of pure practical reason. This essay draws on the Critique of Pure Reason to offer a tentative proposal for how to navigate this difficulty—particularly, the third chapter. While hardly discussed in the text, this complicated shift is the crux of the chapter.

The Baroness’s work on Kant has a reputation for being accessible, and will give you a great opportunity to gain understanding about what Kant’s system of ethics is all about. If you happen to miss this Sunday’s party, be sure to drop next Sunday July 10th for Thomas Hill’s paper ‘Kant on imperfect duty and supererogation‘. Organizer Yahui Chen is looking for volunteers to lead the next discussion.
