‘Wuwei and happiness’
Keilee Bessho (Cal State Long Beach)
25 Mar 2020  •  5:00pm–6:00pm  •  Zoom link

Abstract: In a world of misguided desires and access to information, media, and stimulus, it is not easy to find a passion and pursue it for the sake of pure enjoyment. I argue in favor of the Daoist concept of wuwei to cultivate achievement and ultimately happiness. In this life, one must focus on finding their own personal nature and the passion that metaphorically “sets their heart on fire.” Finding these passions (according to one’s te) will bring enjoyment where goals and unnatural desires dissipate. Instead of the painter painting to be famous, he or she will find joy in just the act of painting. There is no comparison, no expectation, and no end in mind. This is where happiness and enjoyment can ensue. The perspective shift that comes from practicing wuwei, as opposed to fulfilling the “desires of man” (unnatural desires), can lead towards a liberated view of how to live a satisfied life—a life that removes the dependence on the false belief that, to be happy, one needs achievement, happiness, or success as the sole aim. This shift will cause for people to determine their own happiness based upon their own inner-self and nature to cultivate a high life satisfaction and fulfilment.
