‘The basis of moral values’

Abstract: This thesis addresses the evolutionary explanation of morality and its implications. It defends two main theses. The first thesis is that morality is explainable by evolution by natural selection. The second thesis is that the evolutionary explanation of morality does not debunk, but rather vindicates, morality. I argue that the natural moral drive described by evolutionary ethical studies is best viewed to be the source of moral value and moral obligation. I discuss the status of moral facts in light of the this hypothesis, and argue both that moral facts are best understood as universal naturally-formed epistemologically objective ontologically subjective facts, and that they are best approached from within the subjective domain.

Oral defenses are open to the public. For a draft copy of the thesis in advance, please contact Ahmed <ahmed_ras@windowslive.com> directly.
