Alexis Williams, 2022
Class of 2022
Major: Political Science
Concentration: Law, Politics, and Policy
Position: Legislative Intern for Assemblymember Mia Bonta
- How did you find this internship?
I found the internship through the Sacramento Semester Program, which is an internship program that gives students the opportunity to have an internship in a legislative office while taking two seminars at Sacramento State. I was selected to participate in the Sacramento Semester Program in Spring 2022 and I was placed with Assemblymember Bonta.
- What were your daily tasks?
During my internship, my office gave me the opportunity to staff a bill. Because it was my first time staffing a bill, I watched a lot of committee hearings and took notes on them so I can get a better understanding of the issue area the bill was under. I also wrote a fact sheet for the bill, created talking points and Q&A’s for Assemblymember Bonta.
- What was a highlight of your internship?
A highlight of my internship was interacting with Assemblymember Bonta. That was the first internship I had where I had the opportunity to interact with a legislator. I thought it was really cool watching her during floor session and then seeing her walk into the office and greet everyone. In the past, I had internships in other legislative offices, but I did not have a chance to meet the legislators I was interning for, so interacting with Assemblymember Bonta was a new experience for me.
- How do you think this internship will help you as you build your career?
I feel like this internship will help me as I build my career because having the opportunity to staff a bill helped me understand the legislative process more and it made me realize that I want to continue to work in the state legislature. During my internship, I also had the opportunity to network and I met Assemblywoman Lori Wilson. I was interested in working in her office after graduation, and I got an offer to work as a Legislative Assistant in her office.
