Isabel Silagy, 2023

Isabel SilagyClass of 2023
Major: Political Science
Concentration: Global Politics
Position: Political Communications Intern

  1. How did you find your internship?

I was informed of the NDTC internship program by my supervisor at another internship I was completing at the time. My supervisor sent me all the information, encouraged me to apply, and even put me in contact with one of the recruiters from NDTC. It was a classic example of how networking in the internship/professional world can lead to future opportunities and success.

  1. How did being a Political Science Major prepare you for this position?

In many ways, from understanding the U.S. electoral process, to applying the critical thinking and writing skills I have gained through studying Political Science to my work at NDTC.

  1. Whom did you work with frequently?

I worked with an exceptionally talented cohort of interns, and was supported by the incredible communications staff members at NDTC. Additionally, I was fortunate enough to interact and work with some of the impressive electoral candidates that NDTC supports across the country.

  1. What piece of advice would you give to POSC students looking for internships?

Cast a wide net and don’t be afraid to try new things! Internships are the perfect way to dip your toe into many different fields, because they don’t last forever. Internships allow you to confirm what you’re passionate about, find that you don’t like the field you thought you would, or even fall in love with something you never would have expected. Don’t be afraid to try something new, because you never know what could come out of it.

  1. If you could give POSC students one suggestion for how to make the most of an internship experience, what would it be?

Network, network, network! Ask questions, listen attentively, and build relationships with both fellow interns and the staff you work for. Not only will you come away with professional references lined up (which are always good), but the relationships you forge will be by far the most personally and professionally impactful part of your internship experience.
