  • French is spoken in 50+ countries.
  • In a recent poll conducted by the economic magazine Bloomberg Businessweek (“Which Languages—Other than English—Are Most Useful for Conducting Business around the World?” October 04, 2011), French is placed just after Mandarin in order of importance as a world business language: 1) English; 2) Mandarin; 3) French.
  • French-speaking cultures reflect a transnational dialogue and ever-expanding world-literature of perpetual change.
  • French is one of the official working languages of the UN, NATO, UNESCO, the International Olympic Committee, the European Union, the International Red Cross, and more!
  • French is “at home” in North America: The French language is the official second language of Canada, our biggest trading partner, and according to the 2010 U.S. Census, French is the fourth most spoken home language in the U.S., after English, Spanish, and Mandarin.

CSULB’s French and Francophone Studies:

  • Our program was highlighted in the Los Angeles Times (December 31, 2011) for its innovation in teaching French to Spanish-speakers and for offering overall high quality language instruction that prepares students for a global economy with strengths in language, literature, and diverse Francophone cultures.
  • Our study programs abroad (France, Quebec, Senegal and Switzerland) offer students exciting opportunities to broaden cultural and language skills in various environments.
