Dr. Kishonna Gray will talk on the intersectionality of race, gender, and identity in technology history and gaming culture. Dr. Gray is an Associate Professor in Writing, Rhetoric, and Digital Studies at the University of Kentucky, and previously served as an MLK Scholar and Visiting Assistant Professor at MIT in Comparative Media Studies and the Women & Gender Studies Program. Her research is interdisciplinary and grounded in critical race theory and feminist approaches to knowledge production. Specifically, Dr. Gray investigates the impact that technology has on culture and how Black users, in particular, influence the creation of technological products and the dissemination of digital artifacts. Her current research interrogates the possibilities and potentials of these technologies and what they can afford Black communities who have been traditionally excluded from access to technology and technological investment, and digital public spaces as well as. She is also the author of several books including Intersectional Tech: Black Users in Digital Gaming and her upcoming book Black Game Studies: An Introduction and is the editor of several other books including Woke Gaming: Challenges to Oppression and Social Injustice. Her work explores themes that intersect with gender, race, and game studies, especially those that highlight the unbalanced relationship between black identities, representation within gaming structures, and the accessibility to those real and virtual spaces.
