Film Screening and Q&A
The Package Tour
Gyula Gazdag’s 1984 documentary focuses upon a group embarking on a tour to Auschwitz and Birkenau – a group made up of former inmates and their sons and daughters. Gazdag also talks with one woman who was eager to take part in the trip, but was prevented by a wound she received forty years before in the camp – from a kick from a booted foot.
The PACKAGE TOUR asks why these people have come back – to remember? To try to understand how it could happen? Could it possibly happen again? It is a film of wrinkled faces, furrowed foreheads and words spoken by people struggling to suppress their emotions.
Gyula Gazdag is a director of film, theatre, and television productions and a professor at UCLA. He has served as the Artistic Director of the Sundance Director‘s Lab since 1997. He was a creative advisor at the Binger Filmlab in Amsterdam for more than a decade and has worked with new talent at the Script Station of the Berlinale Talents since 2006. His films were screened at festivals in Cannes, Locarno and San Sebastian. Gazdag has also directed documentaries, and theater plays. Most of his films were banned for a period of time in Communist Hungary, and some were denied foreign exhibition.
This event is free to the public. It is cosponsored by SEEFest – the South East European Film Festival – and the CSULB Jewish Studies Program
