Home and Away: the Accidentally Global Scope of Israel’s English-Language Media

February 7, 2022 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

The CSULB Jewish Studies Program is pleased to announce our first talk of the Spring 2022 semester.  It will be by Gilad Halpern at 7pm on Monday, February 7th on “Home and Away: the Accidentally Global Scope of Israel’s English-Language Media.”  Because of the continuing Covid epidemic, this talk will be held over Zoom.

Since the year 2000, global news media have seen their business models turned upside down by the internet, losing billions of dollars in advertising revenue.  Yet the reverse is true in Israel, which during this same time period saw two pre-internet papers go online and dramatically boost their readership. Currently, the range of English-language Israeli-based media spans the political and religious gamut, and includes:

The Jerusalem Post (founded 1932)

The English edition of Haaretz

Ynet (the online version of Yediot Ahranot, Israel’s largest circulation subscription newspaper)

Israel Hayom (Israel’s largest free paper)

Arutz Sheva – a pro-settler radio network

Globes – Israel’s first business newspaper

The Times of Israel – an English-language online newspaper founded in 2012.

Behadray Haredim – an ultra-orthodox newspaper

+972 – an Israeli-Palestinian webzine

i24 News – a trilingual television station, that presents itself as “Israel’s answer to Al Jazeera

TLV1 Radio – Israel’s first fully English-language radio station

The Voice of Israel – Israel’s second fully English-language radio station

In this talk, Halpern will examine the dramatic growth in online, English-language media based in Israel and who the audience for them is in this Hebrew-speaking and reading country.

Gilad Halpern is a journalist, broadcaster and media historian. He is the News and Current Affairs Editor at TLV1 Radio, and host of The Tel Aviv Review, a podcast dedicated to all things intellectual (and Israeli). He is an Idit Fellow at the University of Haifa, researching the history of the Jewish press in Mandatory Palestine. Previously, he was Managing Editor for Ynetnews and Assignments Editor for Haaretz English Edition. His work has appeared on the BBC, Al Jazeera, Al Monitor, Time Out magazine, the Jewish Quarterly and the Jewish Chronicle.  He is a visiting Israeli scholar at San Diego State University, as part of the Murray Galinson San Diego-Israel Initiative.

As always, Jewish Studies talks are free and open to the public.
