Latin American Studies Speakers Series: From the Social Revolt to the Failed Constitution by Juan Carlos Gómez Leyton

On Thursday, May 4th, Juan Carlos Gómez Leyton, (CIPPSAL, Chile),  will talk about the social revolt in Chile and the rejection of the new Constitutional proposal. This meeting is open to the public, and all are welcome to attend.

Juan Carlos Gómez Leyton is a historian (USACH) and Ph.D. in Political Science (FLACSO, México) and Contemporary Political Processes (Universidad de Salamanca, Spain), Post-doctorate in Latin American Studies from the National Autonomous University of Mexico. He is the director of CIPPSAL, Center for the Study of Latin American Social and Political Processes. In addition, he has worked as Academic Director of the Ph.D. Program in Social and Political Processes in Latin America at Universidad ARCIS and taught at Universidad Central, Universidad ARCIS, and FLACSO.  

His research centers on State and civil society issues and social conflicts in Latin America. He is the author of Social and Political Processes in the Recent History of Latin America 1980-2010Authoritarianism and Democracy in Latin American PoliticsPolitics, democracy and Citizenship in a neoliberal society (Chile: 1990-2010), (CLACSO 2011); The frontier of democracy. The Right to Property in Chile, 1925-1973 (LOM 2004), and Chilean Civil Society and the Citizen Pre-conference against Racism, Xenophobia, Intolerance, and Discrimination. His talk will address the process that followed the Social Revolt in Chile in 2019, the constitutional process that came as a result, and the national referendum that failed to approve the progressive text of the new constitution.
