SIG Event – Spanish Author María Bastarós. The Writer is a Lonely Hunter

April 3, 2023 @ 3:30 pm - 5:00 pm

Please join the departments of Romance, German, Russian Languages and Literatures; Women, Gender, and Sexual Studies, and the Spanish Graduate Student Association in welcoming Spanish writer and cultural activist María Bastarós in a Scholarly Intersections event.

María Bastarós (Zaragoza, Spain, 1987) has published the short story collection No era a esto a lo que veníamos (translated into English as Hungry For What (Daunt Books, in press)), the experimental novel Historia de España contada a las niñas [The History of Spain Told to Girls], Herstory. Una historia ilustrada de las mujeres [Herstory. An Illustrated History of Women], and Sexbook. Una historia ilustrada de la sexualidad [Sexbook. An Illustrated History of Sexuality], among others. Her works have been recognized with several awards, among them, the II Premio MAV in 2016 (Women in Visual Arts Award), the Puchi Award in 2018, the Cálamo Otra Mirada Award in 2018, and the Premio de Narrativa de la Crítica Valenciana in 2019.

She is one of the most important figures in recent Spanish literature and one of the most distinct voices in the Spanish cultural scene. Her work, both as a writer and as a cultural activist, contributes to the questioning and subversion of the official patriarchal national narrative. Her stories usually combine the most original, fresh, colorful, striking experimentalism with an astounding way to escape Manichean or propagandist expectations. Her characters are complex, usually cruel or immoral and, through them, she strives to show how literature itself can still be open to a radical renovation.

In this talk, María Bastarós examines the transition from non-fiction into a fictional narrative. She also reflects on how the process of writing becomes an intuitive and explorative practice.

The event, in Spanish, will take place on April 3rd at 3:30 pm at the Karl Anatol Center. If you can’t attend in person, you can watch it via this zoom link: https://csulb.zoom.us/j/83251669469
