Film Screening: "Aus der Zeit" ("Out of Time")

April 16, 2012

A Q & A session will be held after the screening. In addition, a reception will take place immediately after the Q & A session in AS 384.

Austrian documentary filmmaker Harald Friedl’s award winning documentary film Aus der Zeit (Out of Time, 2006, 80 min.) offers a portrait of the independent family store owners in Vienna. In Europe, where economic prudence is becoming the rule, numerous traditional “Mom and Pop” shops are vanishing. Aus der Zeit focuses on four small local shops: a butcher shop, a drug store, a leatherwear shop and a specialty button shop. By the end of the film, only one shop survives. The film unfolds as a portrayal of relationships, a chronicle of memories, a portrait of working conditions, and a testament of love, loneliness, and the passing of time.

Aus der Zeit has received several awards, including The Prix de Juenes at the Cinema du Reel in Paris, the Grand Jury Prize at the Seattle International Film Festival, and the Best International Documentary at the Calgary International Film Festival.

The film is presented in German with English subtitles.

The event is free and open to all.
