Guest Lecture: Professor Juan Cole

Professor Juan Cole will be on campus on Thursday, November 10th, at noon. Students especially are encouraged to attend his lecture regarding current situations in the Middle East and North Africa.

Juan Cole is Richard P. Mitchell Collegiate Professor of History at the University of Michigan. He authors a website entitled Informed Comment: Thoughts on the Middle East, History and Religion–one in which he does his “best to provide an independent and informed perspective on Middle Eastern and American politics.” In addition to his most recent book Engaging the Muslim World (Palgrave Macmillan, 2009), Cole authored Napoleon’s Egypt: Invading the Middle East (Palgrave Macmillan, 2007). He has been a regular guest on PBS’s Lehrer News Hour, and has also appeared on ABC Nightly News, Nightline, the Today Show, Charlie Rose, Anderson Cooper 360, Countdown with Keith Olbermann, Rachel Maddow, the Colbert Report, Democracy Now! and many others. Cole has written widely about Egypt, Iran, Iraq, and South Asia, and he continues to study and write about contemporary Islamic movements. Cole commands Arabic, Persian and Urdu, reads some Turkish, and knows both Middle Eastern and South Asian Islam.
