Guest Speaker: Dr. Lei Jiang — "Reading-to-Write Assessment in College English Classes in China"

February 22, 2012

Dr. Lei Jiang is an Associate Professor in the College of Foreign Studies at Northeastern University in China. She is a visiting scholar in CSULB’s Department of Linguistics.

Abstract:

This talk reports on a framework for designing reading-to-write tasks to evaluate Chinese college students’ English writing ability. A large-scale study was conducted to verify reliability and validity of the framework applied to different levels of college students in China. Discourse-based comparative analyses were made to find the similarities and differences of candidates’ performance in a writing-only task and a reading-to-write task. The study intended to promote a change in college English writing assessment and to provide references and practical implications to college English teachers in China.
