Jewish Studies Program Establishes the Jean and Robert Blakey Jewish Studies Memorial Endowed Student Award

May 7, 2012

The Jewish Studies Program proudly announces the establishment of the Jean & Robert Blakey Jewish Studies Memorial Endowed Student Award. With generous donations from the Blakey and Balan families, as well as the surrounding Long Beach community, the goal of raising $25,000 was met and the first distribution of this award will occur in spring 2013.

The recipient of the Jean & Robert Blakey Jewish Studies Memorial Endowed Student Award will be a declared major or minor within the Jewish Studies Program and must maintain a GPA of 3.5 or higher. Students with financial need will be given preference in the selection process.

Jean Blakey was a retired teacher from the Garden Grove Unified School District where she taught for over 35 years. She was a founding member and Chair of the Jewish Studies Program Leadership Board at CSULB. Along with her husband Robert M. Blakey, Jean was an extremely active supporter of the Jewish Community Foundation of Greater Long Beach and West Orange County, the Long Beach Jewish Family and Children’s Service, Temple Israel, and the Long Beach Symphony. Both Jean and Robert will be remembered and sorely missed by their sons Doug, Charles, and Bruce, as well as the surrounding Long Beach community.
