Degree Requirements (64 units)

LOWER DIVISION (28 units) Take all of the following… 

This is a junior/senior cohort program. Here are the admission requirements. All the courses listed below must have been passed with a “C” or better to be considered:

  • ASLD 101 (ASL 1) 
  • ASLD 102 (ASL 2)
  • ANTH/LING 170 (Introduction to Linguistics)
  • ASLD 124 (American Deaf Cultures)
  • ASLD 201 (ASL 3) 
  • ASLD 202 (ASL 4) 
  • ASLD 211 (Beg. Interpreting 1) (if you have not taken this yet, you can take it here while in the program)
  • ASLD 212 (Beg. Interpreting 2) (if you have not taken this yet, you can take it here while in the program)
  • Successful Interview;
  • Be selected as one of 20 students as a member of the yearly cohort.

UPPER DIVISION (33 units)

Take all of the following courses:

  • ASLD 305: American Sign Language 5 (4)
  • ASLD 306: American Sign Language Linguistics (3)
  • ASLD 311: Intermediate Interpreting and Ethics 1 (4)
  • ASLD 312: Intermediate Interpreting and Ethics 2 (4)
  • ASLD 324: Critical Deaf & Disability Studies (3) *new course
  • ASLD 411: Advanced Interpreting and Ethics 1 (4)
  • ASLD 412: Advanced Interpreting and Ethics 2 (4)
  • ASLD 424: Global Deaf Culture and Languages (3)
  • ASLD 434: Practicum (3)
  • ASLD 444: Exam Preparation Course (1)
  • ASLD 456: Sign Language Sociolinguistics (3)

Minors you may want to add if you are an ASLD major:

  • Linguistics- TESOL
  • Spanish for Heritage speakers, Chinese, French, Japanese, etc. 
  • Translation- under RGRLL
