Enrollment

CSULB’s capacity for each residential intensive course is limited to ten (10) National Guard, active duty, Reserve, or DOD civilian linguists. The target audience is Defense Language Institute–trained, college-educated, native, or heritage linguists at the ILR 2 to 3+-level in two modalities. Service members must be approved by their unit commander or CLPM and on military orders for training. For virtual intensive courses, enrollees must have approval of their commander. The CSULB LTC program does not charge tuition to military or DOD civilian personnel. Military organizations or units are expected to pay for travel, lodging and per diem if attending a residential course.

CSULB’s 16-week hybrid language mentor (HLM) course capacity per language is five (5) National Guard, active duty, FAO, Reserve, or DOD civilian linguists. There are two iterations per year of these five HLM courses, one in the fall and one in the spring. Eligibility requirements are: DLI-trained, heritage, or native linguists at the ILR 1 to 3+ level. Servicemembers (SMs) will coordinate one hour of synchronous language learning each week with the instructor. Students must agree to spend an additional hour outside of class preparing for their synchronous one-on-one class. Students must also agree to take a pre-test and a post-test as part of the course of instruction. Hybrid language mentor courses are free for military linguists.

Enrollment in either the intensive courses or HLM courses requires either the SM or the unit CLPM to submit an online application (below) and a redacted copy (no PII, e.g. SSN) of the SMs most recent DLPT. If the SM has no formal CLPM, they should include the point-of-contact information for their first-line supervisor. Prior to the course, the prospective student must complete an Enrollment survey and a non-proctored (online) listening and reading pretest. Once this is complete, the CSULB LTC staff will confirm the SM’s attendance at the course.  Towards the end of the course, students are required to take a similar non-proctored post-test. Questions about the CSULB LTC program may be sent using the online contact form.
