Ground Education provides elementary students in the Long Beach Unified School District with hands-on, monthly, garden-based lessons at school that encourage students to dig in the dirt, make meaningful connections with nature, explore key classroom concepts outdoors, and build awareness of fresh and nutritious foods. We are looking for multiple interns to join us at schools to help support lessons as well as an intern to help with our social media communications.

Community Garden Internship
Long Beach Organic, Inc. operates 9 community gardens in the city. Our work is not just about growing plants; it’s about nurturing communities and cultivating a sustainable way of life.
We are currently seeking enthusiastic individuals with a passion for gardening and community engagement to join us as Community Garden Interns. This internship offers a unique blend of hands-on experience and learning opportunities within the field of organic gardening and community development.
Learning Objectives:
● How to run an urban community garden
● Management of Giving Gardens & succession planning for local food pantries
● Develop garden education for community members and schools
Responsibilities included but not limited to could include any of the following. Training will be provided:
● Organic Gardening Techniques: Gain hands-on experience in various aspects of organic gardening, including planting, seed propagation, succession planting, composting, mulching, weeding, harvesting, packaging produce, and pruning.
● Tool Proficiency: Develop skills in using a variety of gardening tools such as shovels, hoes, wheelbarrows, and more, ensuring safe and efficient garden maintenance.
● Garden Bed Construction: Learn the art of building garden beds, creating trellises, and effectively utilizing wooden pallets for garden enhancement.
● Physical Maintenance: Engage in activities involving lifting over 25lbs, contributing to the physical upkeep of the community gardens.
● Event Coordination: Assist in organizing and leading field trips, volunteer events, and plant sales, providing hands-on experience in community engagement.
● Supporting Gardeners: Collaborate with fellow gardeners, offering assistance and fostering a sense of community within the garden spaces.
● Data: Assist in the management of garden data
Schedule/Location: This internship offers a flexible schedule to accommodate academic commitments. Location will vary at one of our 9 garden locations. Schedule will be made in advance. All gardens are located in Long Beach, CA.
