Marlene Nava Ramos, PhD, MPH, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chicano and Latino Studies at California State University, Long Beach. Her research studies the political economy of immigration detention and the evolution of the use of county jails and governmental contracting. Her research on abolition and immigration justice has been published in the Women’s Studies Quarterly and numerous news outlets. As a publicly engaged scholar, Dr. Nava Ramos uses action-oriented research learning methods and innovative pedagogies to help her students build connections between theoretical frameworks and real-world outcomes. She earned her doctorate degree at The Graduate School and University Center of the City University of New York and is an alumna of Columbia University and Cornell University. Over the past decade, she has taught at the CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies, The New School, Lehman College, and the Bard Prison Initiative of Bard College.
