What are your Research interests?

My research examines the roles of language, dialogue, empathy, ideology, and physiological activity in intercultural interactions. At heart, I am interested in understanding the process of “opening up” to cultural Others and their realities. My recent research in these areas has been published in International Journal of Intercultural Relations, Journal of Language and Social Psychology, Race and Social Problems, and The Educational Forum.

What are your Teaching interests?

I am interested in researching intercultural dialogue processes because I facilitate them in the classroom each semester. I love seeing students discover their own, unacknowledged realities, as well as those of others. A common comment from students is my courses help them “become more aware of the world around [them]”.

What courses have you taught?

My course offerings center around intercultural communication, including the basic course (COMM 330), the advanced course (COMM 430), and the graduate seminar (COMM 630). In addition, I also love teaching social scientific theory (COMM 306) and research methods (COMM 307).

How do you serve the department and the university and the community?

I enjoy the opportunity to work with my colleagues on important activities such as hiring new faculty and promoting an inviting and safe campus climate.
