The Fifth Annual CSULB Distinguished Speaker Series: Juan Williams

September 21, 2011

Juan Williams, Fox News political analyst, former NPR Senior Correspondent, Washington Post award-winning columnist, and New York Times best-selling author, speaks about his new book Muzzled: Political Debate in America.

Williams is one of America’s leading political writers and thinkers. A top Washington journalist, he dares to examine American politics, civil rights, media, law, and culture with uncompromising integrity and insight.

Williams is currently a political analyst with Fox News. Previously, he reported for NPR as a senior correspondent and the host of “Talk of the Nation,” but he was later dismissed after commenting that Muslims in traditional dress boarding planes made him nervous. In the wake of the news organization’s controversial decision, Williams penned Muzzled: The Assault on Honest Debate, discussing “the countless ways in which honest debate in America…is stifled.” Prior to his stint at NPR, Williams was an award-winning writer and columnist for more than 20 years at The Washington Post.

An influential chronicler of the civil rights movement, Williams is the author of Eyes on the Prize: America’s Civil Rights Years, 1954-1965 and of My Soul Looks Back in Wonder: Voices of the Civil Rights Experience. He also penned Enough: The Phony Leaders, Dead-End Movements and Culture of Failure that Are Undermining Black America – and What We Can Do About It, and the acclaimed biography Thurgood Marshall: American Revolutionary. With an honest and unflinching perspective of American race relations, Williams spurs individuals across the political spectrum to challenge their own assumptions and reexamine the role race plays in this country. He offers audiences a fresh perspective on the inner workings of America—from politics to race relations to the media—with captivating wit and fascinating insight.
