SIG: Telling Joteria Historias: Sequins, Sonic Memories, and Queer Brown Archives of Desire and Resistance

CLA’s Scholarly Intersections Grant and the departments of Women’s, Gender, & Sexuality Studies, Chicano & Latino Studies, and Sociology invite you to “Telling Joteria Historias: Sequins, Sonic Memories, and Queer Brown Archives of Desire and Resistance” with Dr. Eddy F. Alvarez.

All are invited to come learn about Dr. Alvarez’s research projects centering Brown queer and trans communities of the greater Los Angeles and Orange County regions. Showcasing the testimonials, sound, visual art, and other glimmering and glistening ephemera of Latinx queer and trans communities, Dr. Alvarez will discuss his latest curatorial project, “Finding Sequins in the Rubble” an innovative exhibit currently on view at the Museum of Social Justice in Downtown Los Angeles’s historic Plaza Olvera.

Dr. Alvarez is Associate Professor and Vice Chair of the Department of Chicanx/Latinx Studies at CSU, Fullerton. His research and teaching focus on how counter-publics and minoritized populations build communities of resistance and resilience through participation in performance, immigration activism, nightlife scenes, and other sociocultural practices.
