Violence Against Women in the Hamas/Israel Conflict

March 18 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm

The CSULB Jewish Studies Program, in partnership with the Department of Sociology, Not Alone @ the Beach, the Alpert JCC, Jewish Long Beach, and AEN, is proud to bring Dr. Amy Elman to campus on Monday, March 18th to speak at 12 noon in the Anatol Center (AS 119) to speak on the critical topic of “Activating Silence and the Passionate Embrace of Atrocity Denial: Violence Against Women in the Hamas/Israel Conflict.”

In her talk, Dr. Elman will explain the trending October 7th denials by anti-Israel activists with attention to the sexual abuse that was central to the attacks.  The lecture contains three strands to account for this trend on US college and university campuses: (1) the passion of antizionists, (2) the pornography of perpetrators, and (3) the social justice impersonators who give cover to atrocity denial.

Dr. Elman holds the William Weber Chair of Social Science and is a professor in the Political Science Department at Kalamazoo College in Michigan, where she has also served as the chair of Political Science, Women’s Studies, and Jewish Studies.  She has received numerous awards and grants, including two Fulbrights and an NEH fellowship. Her work focuses on the response of states and the European Union to issues of citizenship, migration, violence against women, sex discrimination, and antisemitism.  She is the author of four books: The European Union, Antisemitism and the Politics of Denial (University of Nebraska Press, 2014), Sexual Equality in an Integrated Europe (Palgrave/Macmillan, 2007), Sexual Subordination and State Intervention: Comparing Sweden & the United States (Berghahn Books, 1996), and Sexual Politics and the European Union: The New Feminist Challenge, (Ed.), (Berghahn Books, 1996).

If you are unable to make this important talk, please be aware she will be also giving a talk later that evening (7 pm) at the Alpert JCC (3801 E. Willow St., Long Beach).
