Documentary Film Series 50 Years after the Coup: Stories of Mourning and Rebellion to be held during October and November 2023; the series includes five screenings of national and international documentaries at the Faculty of Philosophy and Humanities of the University of Chile in Santiago to commemorate the 50 years of the coup in Chile. Each screening will be introduced by its director, followed by a panel discussion with the director and special guests who will reflect on the contributions of each film to Chile’s historical memory.
This documentary film series seeks to reflect on how the 1973 coup d’état continues to affect the lives of Chilean men and women in the different spheres of national and local life (the economy, the media, politics, art, music, and social memory) with a particular emphasis on the language of documentary film, and their representation of the past within the present and the profound sense of life in a country still polarized by this violent experience and the many incomplete truths. The series seeks to underline the crossing of physical boundaries as filmmakers and their works transcend territory, culture, style, language, and time-space in addressing lives marked by the 1973 military coup.
This film series is an international collaboration project between the Department of Linguistics of the Faculty of Philosophy and Humanities, University of Chile, and the Latin American Studies Program at California State University, Long Beach, which seeks to incorporate international academic spaces for reflection, debate, and dissemination on the legacy of the military dictatorship both in the national and international context. We invite students and academics in Latin American Studies in the USA to simultaneously participate in this historic moment.
