Young Workers Rising, From Cambodia to California

April 26, 2023 @ 2:00 pm - 3:15 pm

Sponsored by the CSULB Departments of Sociology, American Studies, Chicana/o and Latina/o Studies, funded by the CLA Scholarly Intersections grant!

CSULB students, faculty, staff and community: Join us as we welcome four VIP young worker leaders from around the globe, including a special guest visiting from Cambodia’s garment sector sharing her experience fighting to get Adidas to #PayYourWorkers! We’ll also have young workers of color at the forefront of transforming Amazon, Starbucks, cannabis and more here in Southern California! This is a one of a kind intersectional learning and dialogue opportunity with:

In the years since the pandemic, young workers – many of them Black, Latinx, Asian and migrants – have been powerfully transforming their workplace across the globe, leading unprecedented strike waves and shaking up labor unions. From California to Cambodia, workers are expanding the first-ever Amazon warehouse unionizations, more than 200 Starbucks campaigns, dozens of newly-legalized cannabis facilities, new efforts taking on global fast fashion like Adidas and more. We’ll hear how workers right here in SoCal and in Cambodia are working for both basic issues like higher wages but also fighting for racial equity, LGBTQ+ rights, and more to shape the impact of their employers on communities!

Don’t miss this chance to hear from four young workers as they share their vision, struggles and how they see the future possibilities, and have a chance to learn how we can support global, intersectional solidarity – and even transform our own workplaces

Special thanks to our community partners for supporting this event, and to our guests for making the trip to campus! If you have any questions, please reach out to Dr. Robert Chlala at robert.chlala@csulb.edu
