Latin American Studies Speaker Series

Dr. Bibiana Díaz Rodríguez, Associate Professor of Modern Languages at CSUSB, will talk about the work of Colombian playwright, activist, and performance artist Patricia Ariza. This meeting is open to the public, and all are welcome to attend.

Professor Bibiana Díaz, Ph.D., is professor of Spanish at the Department of Modern Languages at CSU San Bernardino. She specializes in Latin American literature and theater, Gender and Sexuality Studies, and Colombian narrative and theater. Her research center on discourses of national identity, gender, and activism in Colombian theater and performance in the context of the Colombian peace process. She has worked extensively with the theater collective La Candelaria (Bogotá), the Festival de Teatro alternativo, and the Festival de Mujeres led by activist, playwright, and former Minister of Culture Patricia Ariza. She is currently working on a book devoted to Ariza’s contributions to Colombian theater. Dr. Díaz has worked as Assistant Editas of Gestos (UCI) and has published articles in prestigious journals in the United States and Latin America. She also is Faculty Advisor to the CSUSB student theatrical group Acto Latino Teatro Universitario. She has been recognized with several awards: Advisor of the Year Award, Diversity Award, and the 2019-20 CSUSB Outstanding Faculty Advisor Award. Dr. Bibiana Díaz is the president of CSUSB’s Gamma Lambda Chapter of Phi Beta Delta and vice president of the Southern California Chapter of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP).
