World Anthropology Day: IMAGINING NEW FUTURES: RESILENCE IN A CHANGING WORLD

Please join the Anthropology Department at CSULB in our celebration of World Anthropology Day!
This year’s event focuses on student works within the department, and all touch on the theme of resilience and adaptation in a rapidly changing world.
This virtual event will feature a poster session, film festival and a game room in which visitors can answer trivia questions to win prizes (t-shirts, water bottles and more).

Grower’s Hands – Breauna Waterford – 10:30 – 11:00
Hair is an intricate part of the African American identity. It holds cultural and historical significance that
comes with centuries of practice in Africa and through the African Diaspora. “Grower’s Hands”
investigates Black hair as a ritualistic practice; through intimate narratives, participant observation, and
symbolic imagery, you will gain an understanding of how crucial hair is to a Black woman’s identity.
Together We Make Change: Public Art in Long Beach – Dr. Wendy Klein, Katherine Scully and
Breauna Waterford – 11:00 – 11:20
These videos-in-progress document a public art project called “Together we make change,” sponsored
by the Arts Council for Long Beach (ArtsLB) in conjunction with Habitat For Humanity. Each video
features an interview with one of the artists whose work contributed to the project (located in the
Washington neighborhood in Long Beach).
Ebb & Flow – A Podcast – Jessica Miller – 11:20 – 11:40
This podcast is the story of one person on their journey to realizing their identity. Using first-person
perspective, Emi provides a picture of what reality is for many gender expansive individuals in Western
society, as well as illustrates how identity changes over time.
The Body of Prix – Dr. Scott Wilson and Jinny Choe – 11:40 – 12:00
This short VR performance documentary reveals the process of transformation involved when a former
member of the Mormon church’s struggle to reclaim her own sense of bodily independence through
her chosen art form: burlesque dance.
The Puvungna Project – Robert Chhiang-Carleton (dir.) – 12:00 – 12:30
Part of a forthcoming interactive documentary project, this documentary uses oral history interviews to
examine the relationship between the Tongva Peoples of southern California and the sacred land of
Puvungna – in the past, present and future.
Birthplace of the People – A VR Experience – 12:30 – 1:00
This 14-minute 360/VR experience illustrates the birth of the Tongva People on the site of Puvungna –
on what is now the CSULB Campus. The film transports viewers to the origin story of Los Angeles’
original inhabitants through the narration of Cindi Alvitre (American Indian Studies, CSULB), and the 3D
artwork of artist (and CSULB alumnus) Carly Lake.
From the Old to the New – Alexandra Stohs 1:00 – 1:30
Filmed in the Guizhou Mountains of China, this short ethnographic documentary explores the impact of
tourism in Xijiang Miao Tourist Village by looking at music and performance rituals of the Miao. This film
was produced with students in the ethnology department at the South-Central University for
Nationalities in Wuhan, China as part of the Anthropology Department’s Field School in Wuhan, China.
