BQE Text SP22

April 23, 2022 @ 12:30 pm - 4:00 pm

This is a reminder that the Text portion of the Basic Qualifying Exam (BQE) will be held on Saturday, April 23rd 2022, 1:00–4:00pm in LA1–312.

If you have not yet fully passed the BQE, you should definitely take it; nothing is gained by delaying. If you have not already read the texts, get them now and read them carefully. Once more, the two texts for this spring semester are:

Text 1: William Frankena (1939), The naturalistic fallacy. Mind, 48: 464–477.
Text 2: Gertrude Anscombe (1975), The first person. In Samuel Guttenplan (ed.), Mind and Language (45–65). Oxford University Press.

Students are responsible for retrieving the texts. (For pedagogical reasons, the Graduate Committee deliberately does not post them anywhere. Both articles are easily available, e.g., via the CSULB library, BeachReach, and so forth.)

There is normally a call for RSVPs in mid-April. Registration is required; please respond to Prof. Rosenkrantz so that he knows whom to expect, and so that you do not get locked out of the exam. It would be good to arrive early and to get settled before the exam, and normally the proctor will be available to field questions as early as 12:30pm.

If you are planning on taking the BQE this semester but have a schedule conflict, please let Prof. Rosenkrantz know at your earliest convenience. If you have questions, please consult the BQE orientation handout; if further assistance is needed, please speak with Prof. Rosenkrantz.
