BQE Text SP23

April 22, 2023 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

The text portion of the Basic Qualifying Exam (BQE) will be held on Saturday April 22nd 2023 from 1:00pm–4:00pm in LA4–100.

The two texts for this spring semester are:

Text 1: Roger Crisp (1992), ‘Utilitarianism and the life of virtue’, Philosophical Quarterly
Text 2: Norman Malcolm (1960), ‘Anselm’s Ontological Arguments’, Philosophical Review

Students are responsible for retrieving the texts. (For certain pedagogical reasons, the Graduate Committee deliberately does not post them anywhere. Both articles are easily available, e.g., via the CSULB library, BeachReach, and so forth.)

Meantime, Prof. Rosenkrantz will be organizing a BQE orientation meeting soon; he will explain the nature of the exam, how to prepare, answer questions, et cetera. If you have questions, please consult the BQE orientation handout. If further assistance is needed, please speak with Prof. Rosenkrantz.

Normally, registration is required. To register, students shall respond to the RSVP e-mail from Prof. Max Rosenkrantz at the beginning of November. It’s possible that the exam will be held online. If so, the Zoom link will be provided upon registration. Please get settled before the exam, and arrive early as needed.
