BQE Text FA23

November 18, 2023 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

The text portion of the Basic Qualifying Exam (BQE) will be held on Saturday November 18th from 1:00pm–4:00pm. Please get settled before the exam, and arrive early as needed. Bring a laptop computer.

The exam will take place in LA5–149. A hybrid option may be available; so please speak with Prof. Rosenkrantz if you need to take it online (or elsewhere).

The two texts for this fall semester are:

  • Text 1: Klein, P. (1999). Human knowledge and the infinite regress of reasons. Philosophical Perspectives, 13: 297–325.
  • Text 2: Stocker, M. (1976). The schizophrenia of modern ethical theories. Journal of Philosophy, 73: 453–466.

Students are responsible for retrieving the texts. (For certain pedagogical reasons, the Graduate Committee deliberately does not post them anywhere. Both articles are easily available, e.g., via the CSULB library, BeachReach, and so forth.)

Prof. Rosenkrantz will be organizing a BQE orientation meeting soon; he will explain the nature of the exam, how to prepare, answer questions, et cetera. If you have questions, please consult the BQE orientation handout and/or graduate handbook. If further assistance is needed, please make an appointment to speak with him.
